Dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Bill T. Jones was born in Florida in 1952. He discovered dance and Arnie Zane (1948-1988) as a student at the State University of New York at Binghamton. They founded the present company in 1982, and it has appeared at the Pillow a number of times since its 1989 debut engagement, most recently in 2012. In addition to its performances, the company has also spent creative time at the Pillow, developing part of Last Supper at Uncle Tom’s Cabin during a 1990 residency. In recent years, Jones has reached a wider public through his Broadway choreography for Spring Awakening and both direction and choreography for Fela! While many of Jones’s works are text-driven and grapple with major social issues, the solo seen here is an early study in pure movement, anthologized in a one-man presentation known as The Breathing Show.
