This Brooklyn-based company has been redefining the image of women in hip-hop since 2004, appearing that first year on the Inside/Out series at Jacob’s Pillow and returning to the same stage several times since. Led by artistic director Jennifer Weber, the company includes an international roster of dancers from the U.S., U.K., France, Norway, Nigeria, and Japan. Weber trained in dance studios and nightclubs in New York City, Philadelphia, and London, and considers herself to be a student not just of dance technique, but of the larger cultural meanings of urban movement. In this work set to a remix of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Weber says, “We tried to stay true to the sounds we heard, and use our bodies as translators of the music, interpreting the almost 300-year-old score into the language of today.” 4 was seen on an exclusive shared program called “Unreal Hip-Hop” along with Ephrat Asherie Dance and The Wondertwins.
