To commemorate the centennial of Ted Shawn in 1991, Jacob’s Pillow produced a full evening performance tribute that celebrated the legacy of its founder. The program explored the phenomenon of Ted Shawn’s Men Dancers, presenting works made for men in the years since Shawn’s heyday by choreographers such as Garth Fagan, José Limón, David Parsons, Stephen Petronio, and Pilobolus. The program was developed at the Pillow and premiered at New York’s Joyce Theater in October 1991, exactly one hundred years after Shawn’s birth. It was later presented at the Pillow, on a cross-country tour and internationally in Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Novosibirsk, and Tallinn. Seen here are Barton Mumaw coaching Shawn’s Kinetic Molpai and program director Robby Barnett.
