Born in Chicago in 1922, Leon Collins toured with various groups and big bands until the 1960s. A resurgence of interest in tap brought him out of retirement and led him to establish a school in Boston where one of his star students was Dianne Walker. Along with several other winners of an Artists Foundation Fellowship in Choreography, he made his Pillow debut at the age of sixty-one, less than two years before his death.
