Seen here in its third Pillow appearance (following its 2007 U.S. debut engagement), Mimulus is based in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This work, Por Um Fio (which literally means “by a thread”) is inspired by the work of Brazilian “outsider” artist Arthur Bispo do Rosário, who created art for 50 years within the walls of a psychiatric facility in Rio de Janeiro. Mimulus is directed by Jomar Mesquita, who has created an innovative movement language through the study and practice of ballroom and social dances. Mesquita teaches widely in addition to performing and choreographing, and he led the Samba Program in The School at Jacob’s Pillow in 2011.
