As a principal dancer of American Ballet Theatre, Daniil Simkin conceived INTENSIO as an adventurous full-evening “mashup” to showcase some of his extraordinary fellow ABT artists (as well as a special guest from Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal) in world premieres by four choreographers. In this excerpt from Colombian-born and Belgian-trained Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Islands of Memories, the innovative set and visual design by Simkin’s father, Dmitrij Simkin, features attention-grabbing video projections created in real time. This ambitious venture is described by its organizers as “an art project, not a company,” with the aim of creating a unique and special experience for the audience.
