Since 1988, choreographer/writer/director David Roussève has created more than a dozen full-evening works for the company known as REALITY, including three commissions from the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. He tackles grand themes, confronting race, sexuality, and gender in powerful and provocative ways, while also working to charm his audiences through humor and accessible storytelling. His Stardust was a coming of age story for the Twitter generation, focusing on an African American gay urban teenager and his obsession with 1940s music. The music and life of Billy Strayhorn are the twin inspirations for Halfway to Dawn, exploring the emotional undercurrents of his journey through video, dance, and Strayhorn’s own compositions.
