Known for setting high standards in the world of tap dance, Dormeshia has been hailed as “the queen of tap” by The New York Times and is the recipient of many awards including the 2021 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. She made her Broadway debut as a teenager in Black and Blue, and also appeared on Broadway in Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk and After Midnight. Dormeshia made her Pillow debut in 1993 with Jazz Tap Ensemble and has returned multiple times with Dorrance Dance, notably in The Blues Project. Her first full-length choreographic work, And Still You Must Swing, premiered at the Pillow in 2016. The dance seen here premiered as part of a Pillow-produced program entitled America(na) to Me and this section of the work salutes one of Dormeshia’s inspirations, Juanita Pitts.
