Founded in 1961, Dutch National Ballet is the largest ballet company in the Netherlands, under the direction of Ted Brandsen since 2003. Resident choreographer Hans van Manen is internationally recognized as one of the grandmasters of contemporary ballet. Van Manen’s work was first presented at Jacob’s Pillow in 1965 by Nederlands Dans Theater in its U.S. debut, believed to be the first time his work was seen in the U.S. He created Variations for Two Couples on the occasion of Dutch National Ballet’s 50th anniversary, drawing his inspiration both from the music and from the two couples, each with their own special qualities.
