Although she was born in Germany in 1970, Eva Yerbabuena returned to her parents’ hometown in Granada, Spain, when she was only two weeks old. She began dancing at the age of 11, and made her professional debut at 15. In 1997, her career took off after appearing in Mike Figgis’s documentary, Flamenco Women, later making more film appearances with Figgis and others. Yerbabuena was a particular favorite of the late German choreographer Pina Bausch, who presented her company on several notable occasions. A program note by Yerbabuena described the solo seen here as “free and arhythmic, in which the ruffled train of a dress carries memories of Granada: the light framed by its skylights, its green aromas, its plasterwork—sacred to the touch, the gentle tinkling of water, ceaselessly trickling and dripping…”
