This excerpt from the Eastern Woodland Dances program features the Freshwater dancers of the Nipmuc nation, whose homelands include the interior portion of what is currently called Massachusetts, as well as parts of Rhode Island and Connecticut. This presentation combines several traditional dances of the Eastern Woodland region including the eastern blanket dance, the canoe dance, and the eastern war dance. The performance honors the sacredness of the whale to Nipmuc people.
