Canadian-born dancer-choreographer-director Eric Gauthier was a longtime soloist with Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet before starting to choreograph in 2005, and this soon led to the establishment of his own groundbreaking company. Founded in 2007, Gauthier Dance soon established itself as part of the German dance scene and it now tours the world extensively, though this Pillow engagement marked the first time the company had presented a full program in the U.S. Known primarily for his own original and humorous works, Gauthier also programs contemporary dances by international choreographers including Mauro Bigonzetti, William Forsythe, and Jiří Kylián. The work seen here is Cayetano Soto’s homage to the Cuban singer Guadalupe Victoria Yoli Raymond, better known as La Lupe, the Queen of Latin soul; an eccentric, provocative, and electrifying personality.
