Ranked as the fifth largest ballet company in the U.S., Houston Ballet has evolved into a troupe of 60 dancers with a state-of-the art performance space built especially for the company. Since 2003, it has been under the direction of Australian choreographer Stanton Welch, who is credited with raising the level of the company’s classical technique and commissioning new works from the world’s best dance makers. While other Welch works had premiered in recent years (notably the Joffrey Ballet’s Son of Chamber Symphony), the performance seen here is only the second Pillow appearance in Houston Ballet’s history, following its debut in 1979 under the directorship of Ben Stevenson.
