Both Alicia Markova and Hugh Laing were involved with a number of companies in both England and the U.S., and first crossed paths at Jacob’s Pillow in 1941 when Markova co-directed the Pillow with Anton Dolin. Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography for Afternoon of a Faun had caused a scandal when it was first presented by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912, based upon Stéphane Mallarmé’s provocative poem. The same scenario and music were later repurposed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for his Faun.
