The smoke dance is a popular social dance of the Haudenosaunee confederacy, performed here by a member of the Seneca tribe. There are several origin stories for this dance. According to Al George (Cayuga), Wampum holder and faithkeeper of the Allegany Seneca at the Coldspring Longhouse on the Allegany reservation, this dance is a faster version of the thunder dance, which celebrates the start of spring rain. The dance features fast spins, which are believed to mimic the curling of smoke.
