Since the 1970s, Jane Comfort and Company has presented multidisciplinary dance/theater works widely throughout the U.S. and internationally. Comfort is a choreographer, writer, and director who has worked in theater, opera, and on Broadway (Stephen Sondheim’s Passion and Michel Legrand’s Amour). Her musical collaborators have included DJs, percussionists, composers, and vocalists. The Bessie Award-winning Underground River was commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow and partly created onsite with composer Toshi Reagon. Reagon was also involved in the multi-layered Asphalt which, too, was developed in residence at the Pillow. Hailed as a “sumptuous achievement” by The New York Times when it received its New York premiere a few months later, this “scripted dance” creates an urban world juxtaposing squatters in a tenement building with the fantastic world of spirits.
