The work of Danny Buraczeski has always embodied his fertile imagination, pursuit of elegance, and an unabashed love for America’s great indigenous musical form: jazz. After a Broadway career appearing in musicals such as Mame and The Act, he formed the original New York-based JAZZDANCE in 1979. Buraczeski made his Pillow debut as a choreographer and teacher in 1985, followed by his company’s first Pillow performances in 1986. JAZZDANCE relocated to Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1989 in order to merge with Zenon Dance Company, then regained its autonomy in the early 1990s. The year before the performance seen here, JAZZDANCE performed Fission at the Pillow. From 2005 through 2018, Buraczeski was a professor at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts.
