The company known as johannes wieland premiered in 2002 with a sold-out run in New York City and has since attained an international reputation and received several prestigious awards. The company’s Berlin-born director, Johannes Wieland, trained in Amsterdam and performed as a principal with Béjart Ballet Lausanne before moving to the U.S. and receiving his MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While he was based in New York, he was hailed by The Village Voice as “one of the most promising choreographers of the new generation.” In addition to running his own company, Wieland holds a permanent position as artistic director and choreographer of the resident dance company of Germany’s Staatstheater Kassel.
