This all-female intergenerational dance company creates dance works illuminating the presence and power of women in Hip Hop. Their movement includes freestyle, ciphering, party dances, and call-and-response, representing the essence of street and club dance culture while exploring both community and proscenium performance. Founded by Michele Byrd-McPhee, Ladies of Hip-Hop creates collaborative works that celebrate feminist narratives and the intersections of gender, race, and resistance. After their Pillow debut seen here, the company returned in 2023 to appear in a work by d. Sabela grimes. The Black Dancing Bodies Project is an ongoing journey through layers of identity and existence for Black women in street dance and the world at large.
