Lar Lubovitch was born in 1943 in Chicago, and first studied painting before turning to dance. He trained at Juilliard and performed in the companies of Pearl Lang, Donald McKayle, Glen Tetley, and John Butler, before forming his own group in 1968. His works, known for their musicality and rhapsodic style, have been performed by New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and many others. The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company made its Pillow debut in 1971 and most recently appeared here in 2011. This excerpt is taken from a 1981 film made for international distribution entitled Lar Lubovitch at Jacob’s Pillow, including such dancers as Peggy Baker, Rob Besserer, and Doug Varone.
