The company was originally known as Les Ballets Jazz and is now often referred to as BJM Danse Montréal or simply BJM. It was founded in 1972 by Geneviève Salbaing, Eva von Gencsy, and Eddy Toussaint, and has been directed by Louis Robitaille since 1998. Robitaille’s goal has been to develop the company into a research laboratory, offering dancers an opportunity to develop alongside international artists who participate in creative residencies. Although Robitaille had previously performed at Jacob’s Pillow with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, this 2010 engagement of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal marked the company’s Pillow debut. Choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s work has since been performed by the Pillow as part of Daniil Simkin’s INTENSIO.
