Founded in 1957 by Ludmilla Chiriaeff, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens made its U.S. debut at Jacob’s Pillow just two years later, and has returned many times since under subsequent directors. During the time of the performance seen here, the company was under the direction of Colin McIntyre, presenting two works in tribute to the Pillow’s 50th anniversary. This presentation of Soaring saluted the Pillow’s Denishawn heritage, with its remarkable manipulation of silk yardage signifying a wave, a flower unfolding, or a stormy sky. In more recent years, Les Grands presented such works as Nacho Duato’s Without Words and Mauro Bigonzetti’s Four Seasons at the Pillow.
