Born and raised in California, Gerring began working as a choreographer in New York in 1993. From its inception in 1998, Liz Gerring Dance Company has been exploring non-narrative, abstract movement. The company is noted for its close collaborations with contemporary visual artists as well as a longtime association with electronic music composer Michael J. Schumacher. Gerring’s movement evolves from cause and effect rather than storytelling, though her background includes traditional dance composition training at The Juilliard School. After seeing the performance excerpted here, Deborah Jowitt wrote, “Gerring’s sense of form holds the vigorous, even break-neck actions in control and reveals the dancers as the splendid athletes that they are in a human-scale terrain that’s as challenging as any balance beam.” Recipient of the 2015 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, Gerring brought her company back to the Pillow that year in glacier.
