America’s foremost exponent of community-based dance, Liz Lerman was born in California in 1947 and established the Maryland-based Dance Exchange in 1976. This cross-generational group, under the direction of Cassie Meador since 2011, illustrates Lerman’s philosophy that dance belongs to everyone. Lerman’s many honors include a 2002 MacArthur “Genius Grant” fellowship and the 2017 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. The outdoor improvisatory work seen here was presented on the evening before Dance Exchange opened an engagement in the Studio/Theatre.
