In January 1989, Pep Ramis and María Muñoz founded Mal Pelo in the Catalonia region of Spain. Though its name literally means “bad hair,” it’s also a colloquial term for a street urchin. Sur-Perros del Sur (or “Dogs of the South”) was co-commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow and presented here both as a preview presentation during a 1992 residency (when this video was created) and in a return engagement the following season. In 2001, Ramis and Muñoz established a center for multidisciplinary experimentation on a farm, where Mal Pelo continues to create and conduct workshops.
