Martha Clarke is a visionary American theater director and choreographer noted for her multidisciplinary approach to theatre, dance, and opera. A founding member of Pilobolus, she has choreographed for leading companies including Nederlands Dans Theater, American Ballet Theatre, and Rambert Dance Company, as well as directing operas and musical works. Her original productions include The Garden of Earthly Delights and Vienna: Lusthaus, and she has been awarded a multi-year residency at New York’s Signature Theatre. Among Clarke’s earliest teachers was Carol Lynn, a former Denishawn dancer and longtime Pillow faculty member, while she continued her studies at The Juilliard School and performed with Anna Sokolow. For the project seen here, she drew inspiration from the stories of Chekhov, depicting an illicit affair in this excerpt from “The Lady with the Lapdog.”
