Representing a true collaboration among several prominent artists, THE DAY is a multi-layered response to the events of September 11, 2001. It all started with cellist Maya Beiser and a Carnegie Hall commission from composer David Lang, which they began working on in New York during the same month of the World Trade Center attacks. A later Lang work for Beiser, the composition excerpted here, featured text that was crowd-sourced from the internet, with every phrase completing the sentence “I remember the day I…” With both pieces of music combined into a full-evening stage work, the idea was to explore “the ways we remember our lives, as they are running away from us.”
