Acclaimed as a fearless innovator, dancer-choreographer Richard Move first became known for his witty and impeccably-researched impersonations of Martha Graham in the late 1990s. He produced a series of events known as Martha@Mother at a club in New York City’s meatpacking district, with guest performers including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham, Meredith Monk, and Mark Morris. This concept was brought to Jacob’s Pillow for a 2002 engagement billed as Martha@The Pillow which featured a “debate” between Martha Graham (as interpreted by Move) and Yvonne Rainer (as herself). Move’s work has also been seen at the Pillow in performances by Paradigm and the Martha Graham Dance Company. The world premiere seen here boasts striking video and visual designs by Charles Atlas and a musical score devised by New Yorker writer Hilton Als.
