Regarded as one of the premier classical ballet companies in Asia, this forty-member ensemble was founded in 1979 and made its Pillow debut in 2012. The majority of the dancers hail from China while others are from elsewhere in Asia, Europe and North America. From 2009-2017, the company was directed by Swedish ballerina Madeleine Onne, familiar to Pillow audiences as the founder of the Royal Swedish Ballet offshoot known as Stockholm/59° North. The all-male work seen here evokes a dark period in music history when women were banned from singing in church, prompting the practice of castrating young boys to prolong their ability to sing soprano roles. Spanish-born choreographer Nacho Duato is best known to Pillow audiences from the many appearances by his former company, Compañía Nacional de Danza 2 (or CND2).
