Founded in 1991 by Shinji Nakamura, Natural Dance Theatre has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, but this Pillow engagement marked its U.S. debut. Nakamura began his dance career in Japan before studying at Mudra in Belgium and then performing with a Belgian dance company. After returning to Japan, he has distinguished himself as an innovative contemporary choreographer with works such as Alice, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Nakamura remembers a neighborhood lot which was suddenly enclosed with corrugated walls as he was growing up after World War II. He felt that his childhood mind was left on one side of the wall while his imagined future awaited on the other side. Natural Dance Company shared this program with another Japanese company, Ko & Edge.
