Nederlands Dans Theater has been one of the world’s leading companies since it began in 1959, making its U.S. debut at Jacob’s Pillow in 1965. The second company, widely known as NDT2, was founded in 1978 and made its Pillow debut in 2007. Like its parent company, NDT2 is based in the Hague and presents works by a range of choreographers, though both companies (as well as the now-defunct NDT3) show the strong influence of former director Jiří Kylián. Choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot were appointed house choreographers of NDT in 2002 and have together created more than fifty works, many of them commissioned for the two NDT companies.
