Born in Zimbabwe during the second war of liberation, Nora Chipaumire is a self-exiled New York artist who has been challenging and embracing stereotypes of Africa and the black performing body, art, and aesthetics since she started making dances in 1998. With Swan Lake and The Dying Swan as starting points, Chipaumire created Dark Swan while imagining what these masterpieces would look like in a savanna landscape. Seen here in its original conception as a solo for “a swan that refuses to die,” this dance has become a celebrated group work performed by Urban Bush Women and others.
