Since its founding in 1972, Pacific Northwest Ballet has become one of the largest and most highly-regarded ballet companies in the U.S. First achieving national prominence under the longtime direction of former New York City Ballet soloists Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, the company’s reins were taken over by the prominent NYC Ballet star Peter Boal in 2005. Boal has expanded the company’s repertory in many ways, commissioning works such as Susan Stroman’s TAKE FIVE…More or Less and Jessica Lang’s Her Door to the Sky. The work seen here was part of an all-Ulysses Dove program which opened with his iconic Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven. When creating Red Angels for the New York City Ballet, Dove spoke of his desire to evoke certain aspects of the Balanchine aesthetic, citing “the speed, legginess, the formality.”
