Since its founding in 1972, Pacific Northwest Ballet has become one of the largest and most highly-regarded ballet companies in the U.S. First achieving national prominence under the longtime direction of former New York City Ballet soloists Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, the company’s reins were taken over by the prominent NYC Ballet star Peter Boal in 2005. Boal has expanded the company’s repertory in many ways, including a complete evening of works by Ulysses Dove and commissioning a new work by Jessica Lang. Although Susan Stroman is mainly known for her blockbuster Broadway shows such as The Producers and Contact, she has also choreographed operas and films, and created works for companies such as New York City Ballet and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Stroman’s starting point for this work was the idea that artists never really “take five,” as their art is always with them.
