Known for an unflinchingly post-modern treatment of classical dance vocabulary, Pam Tanowitz creates abstract movement that challenges stylistic expectations. She founded Pam Tanowitz Dance in 2000 to explore her vision with a consistent group of dancers, and she has twice before brought them to the Pillow’s Inside/Out series. The work seen here represents the company’s debut in the Doris Duke Theatre. Writing in The New York Times, Alastair Macaulay has said that Tanowitz is “like an author who uses rigorous grammar to write nonsense verse; she’s orthodox and unorthodox, eccentrically pleasing and wittily obscure.”
