Founded in 1992 by Ranee Ramaswamy, Ragamala Dance Company is now under the mother-daughter leadership of Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy. Their work springs from the rich traditions and deep philosophical roots of their Indian heritage with the hybridic perspective of first-generation Indian-American artists. Trained extensively in the form of Bharatanatyam, the Ramaswamys are focused on creating cross-cultural and interdisciplinary work in their home base of Minneapolis. Written in Water explores the concept of spiritual ascension through the 2nd century Indian board game known as Paramapadam, precursor to the classic Snakes & Ladders and the more commercialized Chutes & Ladders.
