Now best known as the artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Robert Battle began choreographing while he was a member of the Parsons Dance Company between 1994 and 2001. David Parsons programmed three Battle dances when his company appeared at the Pillow in 1999, including Strange Humors. Battleworks officially debuted in 2002 and appeared at the Pillow the very next year with a program of seven Battle works, three of which have since entered the repertory of the Ailey company. After Robert Battle was named to succeed Judith Jamison as Ailey director, Battleworks presented its final performances in the summer of 2010 and then formally disbanded.
