This Tokyo-based company toured widely from 1995 to 2001 under the direction of choreographer Kota Yamazaki. Originally trained in Butoh, Yamazaki later studied Western forms including ballet and modern dance. These influences added to his earlier training in both music and fashion design. Yamazaki’s goal in creating Chinoise Flower was “to present what cannot be seen, such as the smell and the humidity” and the performance seen here was its U.S. premiere. Based in New York City since 2003, Yamazaki now leads a company known as Fluid Hug-Hug.
