While no moving images record the occasion, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet made its first leap to international recognition with an auspicious two-week engagement at Jacob’s Pillow in 1964. One of the oldest ballet companies in North America, it originated in 1939 and gained its royal designation in 1953. The RWB has been under the direction of former company member André Lewis since 1996, and he has been the driving force behind new and innovative works that have rejuvenated the repertory. Argentinian choreographer Mauricio Wainrot was born in Buenos Aires, where he directs the Ballet Contemporáneo del Teatro San Martín. His Carmina Burana was created for the Royal Ballet of Flanders during a long residency as their Permanent Guest Choreographer, and he has also made works for more than forty other companies worldwide.
