The Bright Motion was commissioned for the 2013 Fall for Dance Festival specifically to display the artistry of Sara Mearns. Praised in The New York Times as “New York’s pre-eminent ballerina,” Mearns is seen here in her Pillow debut. She has been a principal dancer since 2008 at New York City Ballet, a company she initially joined as an apprentice in 2003. Her most recent Pillow appearance was a full-evening presentation entitled Sara Mearns: Beyond Ballet. Choreographer Justin Peck was first hailed as an important new voice in 21st-century choreography while still in his mid-twenties, and he is currently New York City Ballet’s Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor. Partnering Mearns in this performance is NYCB soloist Russell Janzen, who returned later in the same season to perform another Peck ballet, Distractions. He subsequently spent six years as a Principal Dancer with NYCB.
