Born in Louisiana in 1923, Talley Beatty began his dance studies at the age of eleven with Katherine Dunham and first performed with her company while still in his teens. His company made one of its very first appearances at Jacob’s Pillow in 1948, and he brought the group back in 1952 and 1960. Beatty created works for a number of other companies, including Alvin Ailey, Batsheva, and Boston Ballet. He returned to the Pillow one last time in 1992 to oversee Philadanco’s revival of Southern Landscape, and he died in 1995. In 2022, this solo was revived by Taylor Stanley to salute the Pillow’s 90th Anniversary.
