Established in 1972 by Bill Vanaver and Livia Drapkin Vanaver, The Vanaver Caravan has enjoyed a close relationship with Jacob’s Pillow since its first appearance in 1981. The company’s stylistic range is remarkably diverse, including traditional dances from India, Japan, Senegal, and Brazil, while also including American vernacular forms such as the Lindy Hop and Charleston. A longstanding partnership with the Denishawn dancer Jane Sherman (1908-2010) made it possible for the Vanavers to revive ten little-known works created by Pillow founder Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis in the early part of the 20th century. They performed some of these Denishawn recreations to great acclaim at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, France, and at other international festivals. The work seen here is excerpted from Earthbeat! A Journey, which was premiered at the Pillow.
