The unusual world premiere engagement of Restless Creature was conceived to showcase the artistry of longtime New York City Ballet principal Wendy Whelan, dancing the choreography of four innovative male choreographers, each performing their own duets with her to create a full-evening work. Assessing this premiere, Alastair Macaulay wrote in The New York Times, “Everything about her is riveting, interesting, unusual, intelligent.” Whelan first appeared at the Pillow with the New York City Ballet Choreography Project in 1986 and 1987, returning to perform William Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman with Peter Boal in 2004. Brian Brooks directs his own New York-based company which made its initial Pillow appearance on the Inside/Out series in 2003 and debuted in the Doris Duke Theatre with Motor a month before the performance seen here. Whelan and Brooks reunited in 2016 for Some of a Thousand Words.
