Yin Mei is a category-defying director/choreographer/performance artist who was born in China and is now based in New York City. She began her professional career in traditional Chinese dance during the Cultural Revolution, joining a leading regional dance company at the age of thirteen. She was trained in Chinese court and folk dance, Peking Opera, martial arts, Tai Chi, and other traditional Asian dance forms. Before coming to the United States to study modern dance, she was a principal dancer with the Henan Song and Dance Group and later the Hong Kong Dance Company. In the U.S. since 1985, Yin Mei collaborates with other artists to create works that might be characterized as blending Asian traditional performance and Western contemporary dance. Representing her Pillow debut, this work reflects on her sense of being “robbed of history” during China’s Cultural Revolution. She returned to the Pillow with City of Paper in 2010.
