The choreographer/dancer Richard Move began channeling Martha Graham in 1996, producing a series of events that began as Martha@Mother at a club in New York City’s meatpacking district, with guest performers including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham, Meredith Monk, and Mark Morris. He created the presentation excerpted here especially for Jacob’s Pillow, including a “debate” between Martha Graham (as interpreted by Richard Move) and Yvonne Rainer (as herself). This was the first Pillow appearance by Rainer, one of the founders of the Judson Dance Theater whose reputation as a choreographer and filmmaker has attained monumental status. Largely absent from the dance scene between 1975 and 2000, Rainer has now returned to choreographing and performing for a new generation. Move returned to the Pillow with a program of his own works in 2006, including the premiere of Toward the Delights of the Exquisite Corpse.
