Founded as a multicultural ensemble in 1982, the company was born of an eleven-year artistic collaboration between Bill T. Jones and the late Arnie Zane (1948-1988), appearing multiple times at the Pillow since its debut engagement in 1989. The company has also spent creative time at the Pillow, developing part of Last Supper at Uncle Tom’s Cabin during a 1990 residency. In 2007, the company was commissioned to create a work in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial, and three new works were born, including Serenade/The Proposition. Since the early 2000s, Jones has reached a wider public through his Broadway choreography for Spring Awakening and both direction and choreography for Fela!. Jones has also appeared in a number of strikingly original solo works, and was selected as the recipient of the 2010 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. The company most recently appeared at the Pillow in Story/Time. The work seen here is dedicated to Demian Acquavella (1958-1990), a company dancer known as “D-Man” who died of AIDS.
