Founded in 2003, Cedar Lake specialized in acquiring and commissioning new works by emerging choreographers from throughout the world. Benoit-Swan Pouffer was the company’s director when they made their initial Pillow appearance on Inside/Out in 2006, as well as for its first two mainstage appearances, the one represented here and Frame of View the following year. Alexandra Damiani led the troupe from 2013 until its demise in 2015, offering a wide-ranging spectrum of both American and international choreography. In the company’s final Pillow visit, they presented Jo Strømgren’s Necessity, Again. The full evening Orbo Novo (“New World” in Latin) was inspired by Jill Bolte Taylor’s My Stroke of Insight about the experience of having a stroke. Half-Moroccan, half-Flemish choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created this work especially for Cedar Lake, and the performance seen here was part of its world premiere engagement.
