Slovenia’s first opera house was founded in 1919 in the city of Maribor, which is the second-largest city in this Slavic nation of Eastern Europe. The opera house became home to a professional theater and ballet school, and Ballet Maribor springs from these roots. Romanian choreographer Edward Clug joined Ballet Maribor as a soloist in 1991 and was appointed company director in 2003. His bold retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story, set entirely to the music of Radiohead, interprets the delicacy of love with the cold hand of mechanization in the modern world. Radio and Juliet joins other contemporary versions of the Romeo and Juliet story that have been presented at Jacob’s Pillow in recent years such as those by Joëlle Bouvier and Rennie Harris.
