Dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of Doug Varone and Dancers, Varone formerly performed with the companies of José Limón and Lar Lubovitch, appearing at Jacob’s Pillow for the first time with Lubovitch in 1981. His own company, founded in 1986, typically performs works with fierce physicality and inexplicable gesture. His choreography is always musically driven, but there is no limit to the kinds of music he utilizes. In addition to works made for his own dancers, Varone has choreographed for other groups (such as the Limón Dance Company and Batsheva Dance Company) and contributed to a number of highly regarded productions for the Metropolitan Opera. In 2003, he assembled a special group for Pillow performances under the banner of Doug Varone’s Short Fictions.
