Regarded as one of the premier classical ballet companies in Asia, this forty-member ensemble was founded in 1979 and most recently appeared at the Pillow in 2014. The majority of the dancers hail from China while others are from elsewhere in Asia, Europe and North America. From 2009-2017, the company was directed by Swedish ballerina Madeleine Onne, familiar to Pillow audiences as the founder of the Royal Swedish Ballet offshoot known as Stockholm/59° North. The full-company work seen here provides a rare opportunity to experience this Stravinsky music in a version other than George Balanchine’s iconic 1972 interpretation for New York City Ballet. Dutch choreographer Nils Christe made his first ballets for Nederlands Dans Theater in the 1970s, and has since created works widely throughout the world. His Symphony in Three Movements was originally made for the Royal Ballet of Flanders.
